The Introductction of L-Carnitine
L-carnitine is white crystal or white transparent fine powder, slightly special fishy smell. It is very soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, slightly soluble in aceton*, insoluble in ethe*, benzene, trichloromethane, ethyl acetate. It is very easy to absorb moisture and will deliquesce or may even liquefy when exposed to air. It can be placed in the solution of pH 3~6 for more than 1 year, and can resist high temperature above 200℃, and its combination bond and binding group have good water solubility and water absorption.
Carnitine is a B vitamin with a structure like an amino acid, which is why some people also classify it as an amino acid. Its main role is to help transport long-chain fatty acids to provide energy. This prevents the accumulation of fat in the heart, liver and skeletal muscle. There are three forms of synthetic carnitine, levulinic, dextro and racemic, with levulinic being the more effective.
L-carnitine has a chemical structure similar to that of choline and is similar to amino acids, but it is not an amino acid and cannot participate in protein biosynthesis. Since L-carnitine can be synthesized by humans and most animals to meet their physiological needs, it is not really a vitamin, but a vitamin-like substance. L-carnitine is highly soluble in water and is completely absorbed by the body from dietary intake. The site of absorption of L-carnitine in the body is known to be the small intestine, but the exact process and site of absorption of carnitine (free or esterified) through the intestinal mucosa are not known. In addition to exogenous L-carnitine from food, humans can also synthesize endogenous carnitine by themselves. The liver and kidney are the main organs for biosynthesis of carnitine in the body, starting from lysine via ε-trimethyl-β hydroxylysine and generating γ-butyl betaine under the action of aldolase and aldehyde oxidase, which is then converted into L-carnitine by hydroxylase. In addition to lysine, the biosynthesis of L-carnitine in the body also requires methionine as well as vitamin C, niacin and vitamin B6.
L-carnitine is a compound with a variety of physiologically active functions. Its main function is to promote fatty acid β-oxidation; it can also regulate the acyl ratio in mitochondria and affect energy metabolism; L-carnitine can participate in the transport of branched-chain amino acid metabolites, thus promoting the normal metabolism of branched-chain amino acids. In addition, L-carnitine plays a role in the elimination and utilization of ketone bodies, acts as a biological antioxidant to scavenge free radicals, maintains the stability of membranes, and improves the immunity of animals as well as their ability to resist disease and stress.
The Application & Function of L-Carnitine
Creatine can be used as a nutritional supplement to promote the adaptation of bone muscles to strenuous exercise and to combat excessive fatigue in weak individuals; it can also be used to prepare drugs for the treatment of heart disease and respiratory insufficiency; to prepare pharmaceutical preparations containing human growth hormon; and to compound a new health food with anti-aging and youth restoration effects.
Creatine has several effects on the body:
1. increase the creatine content in skeletal muscle and improve energy reserves
2. regulates glucose metabolism pathways and reduces lactate production
3. increase glycogen reserves in muscles
4. increase antioxidant function
Application of L-Carnitine:
1. Application to baby food
L-carnitine has certain functions in maintaining the life of infants and promoting certain physiological processes of infant and child development.
2. As a weight loss drug
L-carnitine is an excellent active substance for weight loss and is a normal component of the diet. Its main function is to help the β-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids, which is beneficial to the body's use of fat, including burning excess fat for energy, and has no side effects on the body. It is a way to lose weight without dieting, anorexia, fatigue or diarrhea.
3. applied to sports drinks
L-carnitine is the carrier of free fatty acids into mitochondria. Supplementation with L-carnitine can increase the oxidation of free fatty acids to save the utilization of muscle glycogen, which is further reasoned to improve aerobic capacity. Some studies have reported that L-carnitine can also activate pyruvate dehydrogenase activity by decreasing the acetyl CoA/CoA ratio, promoting pyruvate oxidation and reducing lactate accumulation, thus improving anaerobic exercise sustained. L-carnitine also promotes the oxidation of acetoacetate, which may play a role in ketone body utilization. L-carnitine improves tolerance in exercise in patients with disease, as indicated by exercise duration, maximal oxygen uptake and lactate threshold.
4. As a nutritional supplement
As an important nutrient for the heart muscle, L-carnitine increases the capacity of the heart muscle, leading to an increase in the blood output of the heart, and therefore has a significant protective effect on the heart.
L-carnitine can promote the metabolism of harmful substances: L-carnitine can inhibit lactic acid production by increasing fatty acid oxidation for energy supply and reducing anaerobic enzymolysis of muscle glycogen, while accelerating the elimination of lactic acid accumulated during exercise. Carnitine also participates in the metabolic transport of branched-chain acyl groups. In addition, it can scavenge free radicals and promote urea circulation, etc.
5. Application to pharmaceuticals
L-carnitine is the main component of the drug levocarnitine. In clinical practice, it can be used to regulate hemorrhagic shock. The mechanism of hemorrhagic shock is closely related to the increase of free radical content and cell damage in the body caused by ischemia and hypoxia, in addition to the dysfunction of vasodilation and contraction caused by endocrine disorders in stressful conditions.
In veterinary medicine, L-carnitine can be used to assist in the treatment of canine dilated cardiomyopathy. 90% of dogs suffering from this disease have symptoms of carnitine deficiency. L-carnitine can also prevent the development of adriamycin-induced cardiomyopathy as well as reduce the risk of forming myocardial infarction. It is also useful as an aid in the treatment of valproic acidosis.
6. As a feed additive
In animal feed, L-carnitine is widely used as a non-nutritive additive in a variety of animal breeding. In practice, it is found that in aquatic animal breeding, L-carnitine can improve the weight gain rate of aquatic animals; improve the reproduction rate of fish; reduce body fat of aquatic animals and improve meat quality; save feed protein, reduce bait coefficient and improve survival rate of aquatic animals; in poultry, it can significantly improve the growth of broiler chickens and egg laying performance of laying hens, improve feed conversion efficiency and reduce mortality; in piglet growth, L-carnitine In piglets, L-carnitine can significantly improve piglet body weight, daily weight gain and feed conversion efficiency, and the suitable addition level is 50 mg/kg.
Other applications and effects:
L-carnitine is also an energy substance for sperm maturation and has the function of improving sperm count and vitality.
-For example, carnitine can be used as raw material for the synthesis of chiral invariant 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran.
L-carnitine inner salt has strong hygroscopic ability and has been used as a moisturizing agent in cosmetics.
